MicroBlaze CPU architecture merged into kernel.org
With the release of Linux v2.6.30, MicroBlaze is the only dedicated soft-CPU architecture with mainline Linux kernel support. The work to merge Microblaze upstream was performed by PetaLogix, with support from Xilinx.
Linux 2.6.30, released on the 9th of June, 2009, marks a major milestone for the MicroBlaze architecture, with its inclusion for the first time in a mainstream kernel release.
This event also marks a turning point for soft (FPGA-based) CPU architectures, with MicroBlaze the first FPGA-oriented CPU architecture to achieve this feat.
"Before being merged, the MicroBlaze codebase was subject to extensive community review - one of the many benefits of open source software processes", said PetaLogix CEO Dr John Williams.
PetaLogix offers Custom Kernel Porting Services to FPGA and silicon vendors looking for first-class Embedded Linux support on their CPU and system architectures. Please contact PetaLogix for more information.
